Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re curious about ear wax removal, we’ve got you covered with our Frequently Asked Questions section. It’s designed to address all your concerns and provide you with the information you need before booking an appointment.

When it comes to earwax removal, it’s essential to choose a method that’s both effective and safe. At HD Hearing, we understand that everyone’s ears are unique, which is why we recommend consulting with a professional before attempting any removal techniques at home.

One of the most popular methods is using ear drops specifically designed for softening wax. These can help break down stubborn build-up, making it easier for your body to expel naturally. However, if you’re dealing with excessive wax or discomfort, it’s best to visit an audiologist who can perform a thorough examination and safely remove the wax using specialised tools.

Remember, while some may suggest cotton buds or other household items for earwax removal, these can often push the wax further in or cause injury. Trust us; your ears deserve expert care! If you have any questions about ear health or need advice on maintaining clean ears, feel free to reach out – we’re here to help!

Traditionally, ear wax was removed using a method called ear syringing. However, this procedure is no longer performed by most GP surgeries due to safety concerns. Syringing can sometimes cause discomfort, infections, or even damage to the ear canal.

A much safer and more effective approach is now widely used — including microsuction, irrigation, and manual wax removal. These modern techniques are recommended by specialists and offer better outcomes with minimal risk.

Many GP surgeries no longer offer ear wax removal services due to limited resources and updated NHS guidance. Patients are often advised to seek private care or use softening drops at home — which isn’t always effective.

At HD Hearing, we provide:
•No waiting times
•Home visits for your convenience

When it comes to microsuction, we can’t stress enough the importance of using a clinically treated oil like Earol. This product is specifically designed to lubricate the ear canal and soften wax, making it easier for the suction probe to do its job effectively.

Now, I know there are some other treatments out there—like hydrogen peroxide or sodium bicarbonate—that people sometimes turn to. However, these can be a bit too aggressive and might complicate things when it comes time for the microsuction. We want this process to be as smooth and effective as possible, right? So stick with Earol for optimal results. Your ears will thank you!
